The myth of the "Plant Killer"

We hear from people all the time who are worried that they are "plant killers" and therefore can't have houseplants.

We get it. A houseplant is a living, breathing thing that requires some attention and care to thrive. But typically, when you buy your plant yourself, there's no one to ask for advice on how to care for it; little information about its specific water, light, and nutrition requirements; and zero support to help with future problems or questions. At Green Nau, we do things differently to help everyone—the opposite of a plant killer.

I truly believe that with the right start and a little help along the way, anyone can succeed and enjoy houseplants. I think most people are set up to fail with plants, especially houseplants.

So why do houseplants die?

Most houseplants spend weeks traveling from a greenhouse to the store where you buy them. During that time, your plant was exposed to extreme temperatures, inadequate water, and very little light. So by the time you get it home, it's been underwatered, starved for light, and left to rot for weeks. The sad truth is that most houseplants you buy are basically DOA. In addition to this, the number one reason plants don't thrive is due to water issues.

This is usually because most pots for sale have inadequate drainage, and the roots basically drown. Additionally, many plants don't come with clear care instructions, so people tend to overwater their plants. So, overwatering combined with inadequate drainage eventually means a dead plant and a disappointed plant owner.

It's not you, I promise!

So let's put it all together. Most of the houseplants you own weren't properly cared for from the start. They were kept in less than ideal conditions in the warehouse and then at the box store and in pots with no drainage. Plus, you were left guessing whether you were giving your plant the water, light, and environmental conditions it needed to thrive. No wonder the plant died and you're blaming yourself after such an experience! Trust me, it's not your fault!

You can be a successful plant parent if your plant gets the best possible start and is given the resources it needs to help it thrive.
